We hiked the Y yesterday. As I was hiking, I realized that if I looked up the trail I would see a huge hill. This was overwhelming to me. If I kept my head down, watching my steps instead, it was easier. At each turn I would look back and see how far I've come and enjoy the view. As I hiked my legs groaned...it was like two-a-days because I had already gone on a run that morning. The difference here was I was pushing myself to the goal-the Y. When I was running it felt hard, but after experiencing this, I knew it was all mental, much like my scripture study most of my life. I was reading just to say I've done it with no real goal in mind. But when I looked at my husband's knowledge (granted he spent two years studying and teaching it on his mission), I realized he paid the price in time spent studying. If I want to know the scriptures like he does, enjoy them as much as (ok, close to) a novel, I needed to study them and develop a love and longing to learn. Perhaps because my sister's letters home from her mission in Texas talk so much about
Preach my Gospel or because Rob knows almost the page number for any topic in it, I have decided to study from
Preach my Gospel with a study journal. I write down lists of scriptures, comment on what I've read, comment on how it applies to me, and how it makes me feel. It gives purpose and meaning to my scripture study. I feel the Spirit. Instead of reading 10 minutes or a chapter a day, I'm reading, thinking, and writing for 20-45 minutes! At the end of studying I'm excited for tomorrow when I can study more. I guess I'm starting young to prepare for my mission with my husband when we're older.
